On Wednesday, I will be teaching two classes of elementary school 1st graders. I'm still a little uncertain what I'm supposed to do with them, since they probably don't actually understand any English. I sort of have the impression that these visits are mostly just to get them used to and interested in foreigners. In any case, I get the feeling that things are going to be wild and crazy. Six and seven year olds don't have a lot of self control, in my limited experience.
The lesson I'll be teaching is on food and animals. I've got a few ideas for simple activities, and tonight I'm going to run them by Elizabeth since she has several years of experience. I'm hoping I can work a song in there somewhere, since these kids are still young enough that they'll actually sing if you ask them to, but I don't know if I can think of any that are simple enough. Even "Old McDonald" has a lot of words, if you stop and think about it.
If I can keep the kids entertained and mostly under control for the 45 minute class period, I'll consider the lesson a success. I'm stressed out about planning a feasible lesson, but I'm also happy that I get to work with younger kids. They're the ones who get super excited to see a new person and who will really throw themselves into an activity. The older kids are more self conscious and tend to hold back. It's just that younger kids require a lot more wrangling. Anyone have a word of advice?
Try picking a simple tune (like Old MacDonald, Row-Row-Row your boat, or even a short catchy modern music chorus that they might know). Sometimes using the school name and something about them or their class or town really gets them interested. You could even hold up 1 word signs in English (if they can read it). Or a photo of animals or foods or whatever they might know. "Sushi, sushi, sushi on a plate, and food is really great." and may that's the whole song.....over and over again ad nauseum!
ReplyDeletesmile and laugh....they'll love you!

BINGO is a easy and simple song so is the ittsy bittsy spidder. It also takes a while to get through the whole thing. If you have the room you could play red light green light or freeze tag. They will love what ever you do. You could also sing a song and have the children do motions when you say certain words. Then they will learn a few words and have to listen to get it correct. Have fun you will be great! Love you tons.
