The Coming Week

This week should be fairly busy. I'll have my regular junior high school visits, my first Japanese class at the Kochi International Association, two elementary school visits, and the welcome enkai with the Board of Education folks. I've already scouted out the elementary schools I'll be visiting. One of them is very easy to get to by tram, and the other is a 40 minute bike ride away. My accomplishment for today was finding the second elementary school. I was very careful to wear a shirt with longer sleeves and put on arm covers (long gloves without fingers) like all the little Japanese ladies wear, but it didn't occur to me to put sunscreen on my legs. So, from the knee up, my legs are rather pink. Oh well, I've still got the aloe that Elizabeth lent me for my last sunburn.

I'm feeling a little nervous about the elementary school visits. I've already received information about what I need to teach on Wednesday, but I won't find out about the Friday lesson until later this week. At my Wednesday school, I'll have 37 students in each class. I've never dealt with that many kids at once. I also am not sure about having all 45 minutes of class time to prepare for, since I still don't have a good sense for how long the activities take. On the other hand, I won't be entirely alone this time; Mitch has also been assigned to teach at the same school on that day. He'll be working with the sixth graders while I have the fifth graders. At the very least, I'll have someone to talk to during the breaks between classes.
