In December, I took the Japanese Language Proficiency Test level N4. The test has five levels, with N1 being the hardest (you have to be pretty much fluent in order to pass it) and N5 being the easiest. I would say that N4 is a high beginner/low intermediate level.
Anyhow, I took the test in December and was told that we'd get the results around the second week of February. And today they came. I passed! I got 99/120 points on the combined vocabulary, grammar and reading section, and 60/60 points on listening comprehension. To pass, you only need 67% correct on each section. I wasn't even sure I had passed, so I did much better than I was expecting.
It comes as a relief to know I passed, since I've already started studying for N3 and would've been a bit embarrassed to find that I hadn't actually passed the previous level. I kind of joked with my friends that maybe my goal would be to fail a new level of the JLPT each year. The next round of tests is in July, but I know I couldn't possibly be ready by then, so at the moment I'm thinking I'd like to take the N3 test next December. Even that is looking a bit questionable since I haven't been studying kanji since I came back from winter vacation. But I'm hoping I can get my motivation back up and buckle down.
So, that's my good news.
