Well, the time has finally come. On Sunday I'll be taking the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. To be honest, I really haven't prepared enough; I started studying for it pretty late in the game, and for the past week or so I've barely studied at all. It's quite possible that I'll fail. I'm still hopeful that I could pass, but I have no idea how likely that is.
A lot of foreigners I know take the JLPT as a way to motivate themselves to study. That was partly my intention, and it didn't work quite as well as I'd hoped in that aspect. I guess it got me studying kanji a lot more than I had been, but that has dropped off pretty sharply recently. As a measure of language knowledge, I'm very curious to see what will happen. It'll be quite a blow to my pride if I fail, since it would mean that I don't know as much Japanese as I think I do. Level N4 is basically high beginner, which is the level I think I'm at, but I guess we'll see.
A number of other ALTs will be taking the test on Sunday. I know of at least 3 others taking the same level as me, and Julie will be taking one level higher. Julie and I are planning to go to the test together, and afterward we'll probably have a few drinks. I bought some cider at the foreign foods store the other day, and I imagine we could polish off a bottle between us. Whether it'll be celebration or consolation drinks remains to be seen.
In other news, last Saturday I went out with Julie, Sasha, and Chelsea, and we met some interesting guys. Kousuke, someone I danced with in a club, asked me on a date. I told him I had an important test this week, so we haven't gone out yet, but we've sent a few text messages back and forth. Though we talked a bit at the club, the only information I really understood is that he lives in Kochi, he's 27, his job is something to do with banking or finances, and he's interested in English. The plan is to get yakiniku (grilled meat) sometime. I'm looking forward to it; going on a date is usually pretty fun, and yakiniku is delicious.
