Today I went back to the mall to buy the dresser that I had been too shy to ask about on the previous occasion. After wandering around a bit and looking at the dresser again, I approached one of the female clerks and asked if I could get the dresser delivered, and when. It turned out to be much more complicated than I expected. From the parts of our conversation that I understood, it turns out that this particular brand of dressers is shipped from the factory. They don't actually keep a bunch in stock at the store, though I could swear I saw at least one box that seemed to have a dresser in it. In any case, my inquiry led into a fairly long and confusing conversation.
The first lady I spoke with took me over to another woman who could help me with ordering a dresser. I didn't understand large chunks of our conversation, but using a brochure with pictures, she was able to help me order one. Midway through the conversation, we went back to where the dressers were so she could confirm the size I wanted. It's a good thing she did, because I almost ordered the wrong one. Also, it turned out that I could get one that suited my needs better than the one displayed in the store. Instead of four drawers, I'm getting one with five. I do have a lot of clothing, after all.
I made plenty of mistakes during our conversation and confused the clerk a good deal. First I told her the wrong size, then I asked for a different color than she thought I wanted. Still, we managed to work out the details and she filled out the order form for me. I didn't feel too embarrassed because she didn't get impatient about the mix-ups.
In the end, I purchased a five drawer white dresser with a maple-colored top. It should be delivered from the factory on November 10th. Since it's being delivered directly, the delivery is free. I'm quite pleased with myself for being able to explain what I wanted (though I relied rather heavily on gestures and pointing) and set up the delivery. It feels like a very large accomplishment.
Yessssss!! Way to go sweetie!
